Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive in Merida

You will be met at the Merida Airport and transfer to your centrally located hotel, a property that reflects the charming Spanish Colonial style that Merida is known for. In the evening we recommend to have dinner at La Chaya, a favorite local restaurant, where you may have your first sampling and introduction to the unique Yucatecan ingredients, flavors and dishes. Accommodation at Boutique by the Museo.

Day 2 – City Tour of Merida with Lunch at Hacienda

After breakfast, your day begins with a walking and driving orientation tour of Merida where you will visit the city highlights such as the Main Cathedral, Zocalo, Historic Monuments, Paseo Montejo, French revival architecture of the “Porfiriato” era. In addition to seeing highlights, you will get a better understanding of how the city is laid out and where the parks are, so you can navigate in the evenings! Our city tour is followed by a short drive to the Merida outskirts where you will enjoy lunch at the charming hacienda Teya. The haciendas were very important in Merida up until the 1970’s, as they were primarily the sisal haciendas that produced most of the world wide requirements for sisal rope. With the introduction of synthetic fiber, these majestic homes and working haciendas became abandoned or since have been restored. This place provides another opportunity to experience Yucatecan cuisine! Returning to Merida, you will enjoy an afternoon of shopping for regional crafts. Dinner at your leisure. Accommodation at Boutique by the Museo.

Day 3 – Chichen Itza – Izamal

Leaving your hotel early, today you will begin exploring ancient Maya cities and empires with a visit to the spectacular Post-Classic Maya City of Chichen-Itza. With your expert guide you will explore the great Maya civilization at this monumental archeological site where you will see impressive palaces, temples and altars, as well as the largest ball court of the Mayan world. You will learn about Maya achievements in calendrics, math and writing. Returning to Merida, visit the “Magical Town” of Izamal, known as the Golden City for its brightly colored buildings and architecture. In Izamal you can see how the Spaniards built their cathedrals in the same location as the former ancient Maya sites. Lunch can be enjoyed at Restaurant Kinich (not included), where handmade tortillas and cochinita pibil are served! Evening at your leisure. Accommodation at Boutique by the Museo.

Day 4 – Celestun

After your breakfast, you will travel to Celestun to see one of the world’s natural marvels: one of the largest flamingo feeding grounds in the world. The Greater Flamingo feed off of tiny shrimp, making its feathers turn pink. In fact, the sea is awash in the color pink, as there are flamingos as far as the eye can see. Boarding a boat, you will tour the mangroves to see these majestic birds. The boat captains are careful not to come too close, in order not to disrupt their feeding habits. You will also have the opportunity to eat shrimp and fresh seafood under a palapa thatched roof restaurant on the beach (not included). Bring a bathing suit, as you may want to enjoy a refreshing dip in the Gulf waters! Dinner and evening are at your leisure. Accommodation at Boutique by the Museo.

Day 5 – Cuzama

Today you will visit the community called Cuzama, you will board our horse drawn carts on light rail tracks (vestiges of the henequen era), and trot off to a series of spectacular cenotes in the region. You will swim in crystalline water with rays of sunlight peering through and large tree routes dangling in the middle! This experience has been described as, “sublime”. As a reminder, these sink holes are a natural phenomena where the flat limestone shelf has caved in, exposing the underground rivers which are vibrant, deep blue and crystal clear. Swimming in them is an amazing experience. Cenotes and caves were sacred spaces for the Maya people and represented “portals” or entryways into the underworld. The Maya believed (and still do) in three planes or levels of existence; the celestial or overworld, the present, or material world, and the underworld. Finally, visit the market of Santa Ana! Dinner at your leisure. Accommodation at Boutique by the Museo.

Day 6 – The Puuc Route

Today you travel to the Puuc Region, known for its softly undulating green hills. This was a favorite topography of the Maya during the Classic Era and it is here that you can see the extraordinary architecture of this period. En route, you will stop in Muna to visit a local Mayan Community and artisans. Enjoy a ceramics workshop. Then continue to the now abandoned ceremonial centers of the Maya. You will visit the ancient archeological site of Kabah, where you will see the spectacular walled building known as the Codz Poop, dedicated to the rain god, Chac. This building facade features a series of 250 masks/images of Chac. Rain was very important to this region! At Labna, you can see the famous stone archway, made famous in a Stephens and Catherwood etching!

Arriving at Uxmal, you will check into the Lodge hotel adjacent to the site. At 8 p.m., you will attend the famous Light and Sound show at Uxmal, where Chac is implored to bring rains to the region. Returning to the Hotel, dinner is at leisure. Accommodation at Lodge at Uxmal.

Day 7 – Uxmal

After breakfast, your morning begins with a walk to Uxmal, among the most beautiful Maya sites. Your expert guide will lead you through this most extraordinary example of the Classic Period Maya of the Puuc region. You will visit the House of the Magician, the Great Pyramid and what has been known as The Nunnery. You will see stone carved facades of Chac, vaulted ceilings, rows of columns, textile motifs and other hallmarks of Puuc architecture and art. After this, drive to Santa Elena, to meet Don Hernan at his rustic home. Enjoy a typical Mayan lunch. In the afternoon, you will visit the extraordinary Cacao Museum to learn about the importance of cacao in Ancient Maya times. Then return to the Lodge at Uxmal, where you can swim and relax by one of two pools. Dinner at your leisure. Accommodation at Lodge at Uxmal.

Day 8 – Departure

After your breakfast you will be transferred by your private driver to Merida Airport for your flight home.
