Sprawling over the narrow isthmus between the Tasman and Pacific Oceans, Auckland’s waterside location and the local enthusiasm for the ocean have seen it named the ‘City of Sails’. Although Auckland lost its position as seat of Government in 1865, it is New Zealand’s trade capital and centre of greatest population with a diverse mix of Polynesian, Asian, Maori and European cultures.
The warm and sunny climate here encourages sub-tropical growth of all kinds. Lush rainforest covers the surrounding hills and creeps up the cones of extinct volcanoes which thrust sharply upward from a sea of houses throughout the city. The highest, Mount Eden, is an ideal point to view this widespread metropolis, out across the Waitemata Harbour to the east and the Manukau Harbour to the west. The beautiful Waitemata Harbour gives Auckland a nautical flavour and is the largest port in the country. In contrast, the Manukau Harbour, formed during the same geological time as the Waitemata, is an area of mud flats and tidal channels, protected by a difficult bar at its mouth.
Private Auckland Morning City Sights & Auckland Harbour Cruise
This morning you will be picked up by your driver for your half day private tour and discover first-hand why Auckland is regarded as one of the best places in the world to live! Your half day tour takes you around the central city, experiencing many of its best and most scenic sights. Explore Auckland’s famous Queen Street followed by the history of Karangahape Road. Discover the vibrant culture of Ponsonby Village with its boutique eateries and retail stores before making your way over the Auckland Harbour Bridge for stunning views over the glittering Waitemata Harbour back to the city.
Returning over the Harbour Bridge you visit the Viaduct Harbour before continuing on through the Auckland Domain. With its classic charm the Auckland Domain is the city’s oldest and one of its largest parks, situated on a 62,000 year old volcano. Following our visit to the Domain you continue to Parnell Village for our morning tea stop. The historic buildings of Parnell have been transformed in to a trendy shopping area featuring many boutiques, antique, craft and specialty shops.
Following this, your tour will then take you along the stunningly scenic waterfront route of Tamaki Drive to the Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park, in Mission Bay. Michael Savage is often regarded as one of New Zealand’s greatest and revered Prime Ministers, and was given the title of ‘New Zealander of the Century’ by the New Zealand Herald in 1999. The memorial Park has beautiful panoramic views over Whenua Rangatira, Auckland city and Waitemata Harbour. This park is a popular wedding venue, with its formal gardens and tranquil atmosphere. Next you head towards Mission Bay, the popular seaside suburb which was once home to a Melanesian Missionary school. Enjoy the beach and promenade – popular with Aucklanders and visitors alike.
The tour will then take you back along the waterfront before returning to downtown Auckland for your lunch cruise.
Escape city life as the luxury cruise vessel Ipipiri glides out of Auckland’s Viaduct. Take in highlights of the beautiful Waitemata Harbour like the Auckland Harbour Bridge, the seaside suburb of Devonport with its twin lookouts of Mt Victoria and North Head, Bean Rock Lighthouse and Bastion Point.
Enjoy a three-course buffet lunch showcasing fresh local produce and wines as you cruise past the islands of the Hauraki Gulf: Rangitoto, Motutapu, Motuihe with its golden sandy beaches and little Browns Island.
