Lovely combination of some of the most romantically active spots in Costa Rica. Raft the tropical Reventazon River, spend time in the pastoral Turrialba Valley, marvel at the imposing Arenal Volcano and soothe your muscles at the nearby hot springs. At night watch the fiery volcano explosions from the privacy of your own balcony. Then move on to Tamarindo; enjoy the surrounding national parks and the magnificent beaches: swim, snorkel, surf and sail the Pacific on a sunset cruise.
Arrive in Costa Rica (Turrialba) After clearing customs and immigration, proceed to the reception area, where our local representative will be holding a board with your name on it. You will be greeted with a “Bienvenidos a Costa Rica” and transferred to the romantic Casa Turire Hotel, located in the pastoral Turrialba Valley, 40 miles from San Jose. Depending on your arrival time you may have time to take a tour of the plantation on horseback or by car, or take a dip in the spring-fed swimming pool.
Take me to the river (Turrialba) The Reventazon River gathers its waters from the rugged core of the Cordillera de Talamanca, from where it tumbles down along a cliff-lined gorge to finally meander through a gorgeous landscape of coffee and sugar cane plantations. We depart early in the morning for the put-in point, where we don vests and helmets while listening to a safety orientation. Then it is 10 miles of the best class III rapids you will ever paddle complete with stunning jungle scenery and tons of wildlife watching opportunities including toucans, kingfishers, herons, tanagers, iguanas and bright green Jesus Christ lizards (you know, the funny ones that run over water). In the afternoon we return to our plantation hotel. (B,L)
Time to get hot: Active volcanoes and hot springs (Arenal) The day starts with an overland transfer to the Arenal area, a three-hour ride, which will take us through papaya and pineapple plantations into one of the most fascinating areas in Costa Rica. The rest of the day is free to scout the surroundings or relax in the rushing waters naturally heated by the volcano and channeled into numerous hot springs. At night, the most active of all Costa Rica's volcanoes may display a true show of fiery explosions. (B)
Exploring Arenal National Park (Arenal) This morning don our hiking boots and join our guide for an excursion around the growling volcano. You will trek across fields of solidified lava enjoying stunning vistas of Lake Arenal before entering a dense rain forest where you may spot howler and white-faced monkeys, coatis, toucans and parrots. Return to the hotel in time for lunch and a short siesta. In the afternoon jump on horses for an easy ride to the truly beautiful La Fortuna Waterfall. You may choose to take a dip in the clear waters before returning to the hotel. This evening you may want to return to the Hot Springs to soothe your muscles in the inviting pools. (B)
Take a break or maybe not (Arenal) Today you may take a break from our eventful schedule. But if you are still in the mood for some more action, here are some ideas: Take advantage of Lake Arenal’s excellent conditions for windsurfing and fishing, visit the Venado Caves, go mountain biking or sign up for the full day tour to Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge. Or you may take a stroll in the surrounding countryside, catch up with your reading and revisit the hot springs. At night, we will be expectantly waiting for the volcano to offer one of its fiery performances. (B)
Today we reach the coast (Tamarindo) Our private driver will pick you up at your hotel and drive you around Lake Arenal up to the junction with the Panamerican Highway. Once there you will be heading for Liberia, the main getaway to the Costa Rican North Pacific. Once in Liberia, we take a turn and head for the fishing village of Tamarindo, which will welcome you with its quaint hotels, fabulous beach and laid-back atmosphere. The rest of the day is at leisure to enjoy the beach, admire the sunset and dine on fresh seafood. (B)
Enjoy the beach…and its surroundings (Tamarindo) Enjoy Costa Rica’s premier beach destination as you wish. Guanacaste features hundreds of white, gold, pink, and black sandy beaches, crowds of underwater creatures, spectacular sunsets, night excursions to turtle nesting sites (October to February), romantic hotels, snorkeling tours, sunset cruises, national parks, volcanoes, hot springs and some of the best fishing in the world. Please check with the concierge or the tour desk at your hotel for the latest on tours and dining venues. (B)
Wrap it up in style! (Central Valley) Free morning. In the afternoon we board a flight back to San Jose. We spend our last day at the romantic Finca Rosa Blanca located in the mountains surrounding San Jose. A haven of peace and tranquility, Rosa Blanca has been described as the most beautiful hotel in Central America. Relax by the natural spring-fed pool, enjoy a succulent dinner and take in the commanding vistas of the Central Valley. The perfect finale for a great romantic adventure! (B)
Depart San Jose Today our local representative will be transferring you to the airport in time for your departure flight. We wish you a pleasant trip back home and hope to enjoy your company in another exciting adventure very soon. (B)
